Goodbye, Mr. Chips Screenings
Saturday, July 12 at 1pm
Friday, July 18 at 1pm
In partnership with Des Moines Film, Des Moines Metro Opera is excited to present two screenings of American composer Gordon Getty’s new opera, reimagined for film, Goodbye, Mr. Chips, as an add-on for festival season audiences. The screenings of Goodbye, Mr. Chips will be held in the beautifully restored Varsity Cinema in Des Moines.
Based on the popular 1934 novella Goodbye, Mr. Chips and other stories by James Hilton, the opera tells the story of a teacher at Brookfield, an all-boys English boarding school to which Mr. Chipping—known to his students as "Mr. Chips”—dedicates most of his adult life. The film chronicles Mr. Chips’ story of love, loss and learning over his decades-long tenure at Brookfield.
"Getty’s score is characteristically rich, layered and long-arced, with especially exquisite string voicings, vivid base lines, and a number of lovely and affecting motivic recurrences." – La Scena Musicale
