Artist in Recital: Sun-Ly Pierce

Join us for a recital featuring mezzo-soprano Sun-Ly Pierce and pianist Allen Perriello.

Chinese-American mezzo-soprano Sun-Ly Pierce, Third Prize Winner of the 2024 Operalia competition, is rapidly establishing herself as a versatile and dynamic artist in both traditional and contemporary repertoire. Fresh off a "definitive interpretation" (Opera Today) and role debut as Rosina in DMMO's production of The Barber of Seville, Sun-Ly brings her "ravishing" and "stellar" voice to Des Moines this spring for an intimate musical program before returning this summer for a role debut as the Fox in The Cunning Little Vixen.

Artist Biography

Chinese-American mezzo-soprano Sun-Ly Pierce, Third Prize Winner of the 2024 Operalia competition, is rapidly establishing herself as a versatile and dynamic artist in both traditional and contemporary repertoire.

During the 24/25 season, Sun-Ly will return to several notable theaters for exciting role debuts, including Opera Philadelphia in L’amant anonyme (Dorothée), Detroit Opera in Così fan tutte (Dorabella) in a new production by Yuval Sharon, and Des Moines Metro Opera in The Cunning Little Vixen (Fox). On the concert stage, she will debut with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra in Messiah, The Corpus Christi Symphony Orchestra in excerpts from Carmen, the Britt Festival Orchestra for Ravel’s Shéhérazade, and the Colorado Springs Philharmonic in Madama Butterfly (Suzuki). She will also return to the Dallas Symphony Orchestra in Die Walküre (Siegrüne) under the baton of Music Director Fabio Luisi. Future seasons include a debut with the Santa Fe Opera and returns to The Metropolitan Opera and Houston Grand Opera.

Artist Biography

Allen Perriello is a highly regarded pianist, vocal coach, administrator, and educator. Allen is currently the Director of Artistic Administration at Des Moines Metro Opera. Previously, Allen was the Head of Music at Minnesota Opera and the Director of the Young Artists Program at The Glimmerglass Festival. A graduate of the Merola Opera Program and Adler Fellowship at San Francisco Opera, Allen has held music staff positions at Arizona Opera, Pittsburgh Opera, Seattle Opera, and Boston Lyric Opera. He has appeared in recital with a wide array of singers at venues including Carnegie Hall, Philadelphia Chamber Music Society, and Cincinnati Song Initiative. This season, Allen looks forward to residencies at The Hartt School, Pensacola Opera, University of Northern Iowa, Drake University, New England Conservatory of Music, and University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
