I remember like it was yesterday when Ms. Jill Fleming, who performed with Dr. Larsen in NYC, heard me sing at DMAC. Right after the performance, they came up to me and said, “Highway, I have to take you to meet with Dr. Larsen. He needs to hear you.” Dr. Larsen and Dr. Maria Dipolma gave me a warm welcome and scheduled me for the audition. When the time came, my late wife Geni Stanley Sigadi took me because I didn’t have a car at the time. I sang my heart out when I finished, and they smiled and said, “Thank You” then I walked out. I saw my late wife crying and said, “You gonna leave me and forget about me. I can tell you got it. They love you.” I replied by saying, “I’m doing this for us for our family.” Later, Dr. Larsen and Dr. Dipolma called both of us and said, “Congratulations!! You passed the audition, yet the problem is you don’t have a car to commute back and forth.” I broke down and said, “I really want this, and I don’t want to wait I’m getting old.” They both laughed and looked at me and said “How old are you?” I said, “I’m 24 years old.” Dr. Larsen said, “You call 24 years, old? That’s a perfect age for you especially now since you have a job. Work on getting a car, and we will hold the scholarship for you for the next school year. By the way, since you are a Tenor, we have a Tenor that’s performing tonight at Legburg Hall this evening named John Osborn. He just won a prestigious competition.” That moment, I realized I was in the right place at the right time. Then in the same year, Ms. Perry my vioce Teacher at DMAC, told me I have to take you to my friend Dr. Robert Larsen. I performed with him in NYC. He needs to hear you. I replied “He heard me. Ms. Fleming took me to meet him, and I already did an audition. I was accepted and will be starting next year.” She said, “This time, it’s different. You’re going with me!” So, we went. He recognized me immediately as she was introducing me to him and said, “He’s starting next year once he gets his stuff together.” I started going to school part time then he helped with writing reference letters to get financial assistance to attend school full time. There were few respondents, but I became a full time student. Later in my studies, he said “Highway, I’m very proud of you. I don’t know how you do it. I can not imagine working full time and going to school full time while having a family adjusting to a new culture.” Thank you Sir for everything. I will always love and appreciate you. You will be missed by many, for I am sure there are many stories like mine. Thank you for being my angel of guidance. Highway Sigadi ( African Tenor)
